The technology itself was developed in the 1990s, with the first prototype PET/CT scanner demonstrated by David Townsend and Ronald Nutt in the mid-1990s.
- 1998: The first commercial PET/CT scanners were introduced.
- 1998–1999: Early systems began clinical use, notably from GE Medical Systems and Siemens.
- 2000s: PET/CT rapidly replaced standalone PET for many oncology applications because it combined metabolic information from PET with anatomical information from CT.
- Today: PET/CT is a standard imaging modality, particularly in oncology, cardiology, and neurology.
As of August 2026, Greece has 29 installed and operational PET/CT systems. One additional system is under installation at Aretaieion University Hospital in Athens, while another is at the public-tender stage at Lamia Hospital. Thus, the PET/CT registry and near-term pipeline comprises 32 systems, of which 29 are operational, 2 are under installation, and 1 is in procurement process.

The market share of the systems are GE Healthcare 67% / Siemens 30% /United Imaging 3%.
The first PET/CT system in Greece was installed at HYGEIA Private Hospital in Athens in 2004 and in 2007 in Evangelismos public hospital in Athens.
In Europe the first commercial PET/CT installed at University Hospital Essen (Universitätsklinikum Essen), Germany, in 2002
The first commercial PET/CT systems were introduced in 2001. GE announced the Discovery LS in early 2001, followed by Siemens’ Biograph a few months later.
The installation of PET/CT systems in hospitals or other healthcare service facilities (Diagnostic Centers) is subject to Ministerial Decision DYG2/G.P. oik. 154949/2010 (Government Gazette B/1918/2010), as amended and currently in force.
For positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) systems, the applicable provision is one (1) machine per 650,000 inhabitants (Ministerial Decision D1d/G.P. oik. 29010/2025 – Government Gazette B/3561/2025).
For new-technology PET/CT systems, the population criterion shall be based on the population of the Regions of Greece, according to the census conducted by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
The number of feasibility licenses to be granted under the above provisions shall not exceed 50% above the total number of feasibility licenses approved to be granted in the Regions of Central Macedonia and Attica.
For the remaining Regions of the country, the number of feasibility licenses to be granted for new-technology PET/CT systems shall be one (1) machine per 650,000 inhabitants.
The above population criterion does not apply to National Health System (ESY) hospitals, University Hospitals, Military Hospitals, or private hospitals and clinics.
